    Job Description
    Full-time, non-exempt salaried position
    $33,000 – 35,000 plus benefits
    Competitive salary with comprehensive benefits plan
    This position reports to the President and CEO of the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce.

    The Downtown Business District Committee is a committee of the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce. The committee is responsible for developing and promoting the mission, programs, and image of the Downtown Brookings area. The Downtown Brookings Business District is made up of over 150 different businesses featuring a mix of retail, hospitality, service, and other industries.

    Position Summary:
    The Director of Downtown Brookings is a visionary leader that works with the Downtown committee to meet strategic objectives and goals. He/she is responsible for the development, conduct, execution and documentation of programs and events that promote the Downtown Business District. The Director is the principal on-site staff person responsible for coordination of all program activities and volunteers, as well as representing the Downtown District regionally and nationally, as appropriate. The Director will work closely with the Chamber President, Downtown Committee Chair and members, City of Brookings, and business leaders to reach identified goals and objectives.

    Qualifications:
    • Proven leader who has experience with an association or membership organization.
    • Must be a self-starter who is energetic, entrepreneurial, creative and well organized.
    • He/she must be capable of working independently as well as in a team environment and be able to take direction from the Downtown Committee.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
    • Track record of building relationships with key members of the community.
    • Experience in planning and executing events and programs.
    • Experience with budgets and financials.
    • At least two years experience with project coordination.
    • Public relations and marketing skills including maintaining social media platforms and following marketing trends.
    • Experience with creative problem solving.
     
     
    Education and Experience:
    Bachelor’s degree with two years experience in at least one of the following areas: public relations, business management, and/or event planning. Individual must be proficient in Windows-based computer programs and social media marketing. Graphic design knowledge and non-profit fundraising experience is desirable.

    Range of Duties to be Performed:
    • Coordinate activity of existing Downtown Brookings programs, such as Crazy Day, Downtown at Sundown, Trick-or-Treating, Festival of Lights, Frost Fest activities, SDSU Parent’s Weekend, and additional recurring events.
    • Develop and organize new Downtown programs to meet strategic objective and goals set forth by the Downtown Committee.
    • Manage all day-to-day operations aspects of the Downtown Brookings Business Districts programs, including record keeping and communications.
    • Develop and conduct ongoing public awareness and education programs designed to enhance appreciation and knowledge of Downtown and local businesses.
    • Collaborate on downtown events, including cooperative retail promotional events in order to improve the quality and success of events to attract people downtown. Work closely with local media to ensure maximum event coverage. Encourage design excellence in all aspects of promotion in order to advance an image of quality for the downtown.
    • Develop, maintain, and update Downtown Brookings website and social media presence.
    • Assist in preparing for, running, and following up on Downtown Committee meetings.
    • Present monthly reports on key deliverables to Downtown Committee.
    • Represent the community and speak effectively on the Committee’s mission and vision.
    • Become familiar with all persons and groups directly or indirectly involved in the Downtown Brookings Business District.
    • Help build strong and productive working relationships with appropriate public agencies.
    • Position will require some mandatory evening and weekend hours for events and meetings, as well as infrequent travel to conferences and meetings.
    • All other duties as assigned.

    This position requires working before or after normal business hours, including some weekend hours, and up to 10% travel.
     
    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. Must be able to sit and stand for extended periods of time and lift up to 30 pounds.
     
    Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status).
